21 Home Maintenance Tasks You Should Never Forget

Create (or find) a Calendar!

Now you have a list, but how in the world are you going to remember what to do when? Keeping track on a calendar is a stress-free way to manage those tasks that only need to be done once or twice a year.

Test Your Smoke Detectors

While smoke detectors may be one of THE most annoying sounds ever, you definitely want to make sure they are in working order in the event that you need them! Check them regularly to ensure that they will work properly when and if needed.

Clean Your Bathtub With Your Drill

This is one of those tasks that we all hate, but it’s a necessary evil to maintain cleanliness within your home, and avoid bigger problems like mold, mildew or even leaks! It doesn’t have to be an all-day chore to clean every bit of grime out of the corners of your bathtub – just us your drill, and a foam ball polishing attachment every couple of months to keep it shiny clean!

Pressure Wash Your House and Driveway

You can easily stay on top of dirt and debris by regularly washing your house and driveway with a pressure washer. Doing this regularly will help avoid the buildup that can cause other problems.

Avoid Spiders

No one wants spiders in their house…but they often feel like it may be cozier indoors than out. Avoid them coming in by spraying peppermint oil around your exterior door frames and garage doors.

Clean Out Your Drains

All the drains in your home (sinks, showers, bathtubs, etc.) should be cleaned out regularly. You don’t have to go and buy a specific cleaner to do the job though – try this DIY drain cleaner and get those pipes cleared out in no time!

Don’t forget these home maintenance tips!

Lube Garage Door Springs

We often take for granted the fact that our garage door magically opens and closes at the push of a button every day…but those springs and hinges work hard! You’ll want to coat the springs at least once a year to make them last as long as possible.

Change Your Air Filters

Air filters can quickly collect dust and other allergens in your home, especially when you are running the air frequently. Change your filters frequently to maintain optimal performance (and reduce allergies in your home!)

Insulate Your Attic

If your attic isn’t already insulated, consider insulating ASAP! As much as 25% of your internal air temps can be lost through your attic. Don’t pay for your air to escape through your attic for one more season!

Pest Control – Inside the Home

Avoid the urge to squish that tiny annoying ant when you see it. Instead, lay out the bait and let them come…the more that come, the better. They’ll take the bait back to their nest, eliminating the whole colony.

Clean Your Dishwasher

Cleaning your dishwasher twice a year can prolong the life of the appliance and make sure you aren’t wasting water and dish detergent.

Use Synthetic Soap

You need to choose the right soap based on your family needs, but don’t forget your home in your decision-making process. If you can, use synthetic soaps – they are easier on your bath and shower surfaces because they don’t contain the ingredients that cause tough soap scum.

Clean Your Dryer Vent

Cleaning your dryer vent is an absolute must – neglecting to do so will not only affect the performance of your machine but could cause fires. Make sure you clean your dryer vent at least once a year to avoid this issue.

Inspect and Clean Gutters

Long-term damage can easily accumulate if your gutters are not working properly. Inspect and clean them out regularly, at least twice a year to ensure proper drainage and functionality.

Flush Hot Water Heater

Water heaters are easy to neglect, but by giving them just a few minutes of maintenance just once a year, you can not only prolong the life of the heater but make sure your home remains as safe and energy efficient as possible.

Fix Caulk in Windows

Seal off air leaks and keep out moisture by inspecting the caulk around windows once a year and, if needed, remove old caulk and re-caulk with weather appropriate sealant.

Create a Lawn Care Schedule

Certain tasks should be done before, during and after each season to get the best results from your lawn. Since your lawn is the first people see when they drive up, make sure you take care of it and treat it well!

Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans

Who knew that you were supposed to switch the direction your ceiling fan turns based on the season? Not only does it save money, but it also saves energy! In the cooler months, having the blades circulating in a clockwise direction will create an updraft, whereas having the blades circulating in a counter-clockwise motion will create a breeze, which is perfect for the hotter summer months.
