I grew up in the midwest where Fall was a season that promised two things: beautiful colors and a lot of yard cleanup! Raking leaves was a regular event from late September through snowfall. And although fall yard cleanup can feel like a burdensome task, it has got to be one of the best chores out there for kids to help with! It gets them outside in the crisp fall air, it gets them working on something that benefits others, and it can be as fun as you make it!

That’s why we always threw leaf raking parties at my grandparents’ house. My grandmother would always have donuts and hot apple cider ready. My mom brought chili, my aunts made homemade breads and my cousins and I–we brought the FUN. We helped our parents rake and all, but took frequent breaks to jump into giant leaf piles, make leaf angels, and throw leaves in the air. We collected the most beautiful leaves and saved them for art projects and book marks. These were important tasks. 🙂
Now that I’m a mom, I’ve realized that we need to keep this tradition going. And with a little help from the Newell Rubbermaid® Roughneck Trash Can, we’ve done just that!
First, we made a plan: my husband and I went to Home Depot and found the best trash can out of the whole bunch for the job. He thought it looked functional and versatile, and I loved the value!

Why not do yard cleanup on a week day and save the weekends for apple orchards and corn mazes with the whole family?

The boys and I made games out of putting the leaves into our trash can. We did a speed round to see how fast we could fill a bag with leaves, and then we tried to beat that time with the next bag! My basketball-loving toddler demanded that we pretend to play a basketball game with the leaves and dunk into the “basket.” I loved how he was using his imagination! We also saw how far away we could stand to throw the leaves and sticks into the trash can (and we learned quickly that light objects are hard to throw with accuracy but heavier objects were easy!)
I loved that no matter what we did, the LinerLock™ bag cinch prevented the bag from falling in as we threw our yard waste into the bag in so many crazy ways. The 32 gallon trash can was exactly the right size to gather lots of yard waste, but to still be easy to transport for me and for the little boys!
