Moisturizing for Dry Skin Tips for Winter and Summer

Dry skin is the result of a lack of enough moisture on your skin. Although there are many things that can cause dryness of the skin, some of the most common ones are:

  • The weather
  • Harsh detergents or soaps
  • Hot shower or bath
  • Having a swim in pools

1. Dry brush your skin

The first dry skin tip is dry brushing. Dry brushing is like a body massage you do to your skin. It’s a first aid beauty tip, without any formulas, gels, and fragrances. It’s a skin-care routine for ALL skin types. It uses a soft-bristled brush that is stroked in your skin in a certain pattern. As the name implies, you have to do it while your skin is dry.  Doing it after you took a bath is much recommended. Just be careful when brushing your skin, especially if you have some wounds or rashes as it may cause more harm to your wounds.

It is said that dry brushing your skin has lots of benefits including removing dead skin cells for softer skin (obviously), increasing circulation, and reducing the appearance of cellulite.

2. Exfoliate That Dry Skin

Exfoliating is so important. It is the process of eliminating dead skin cells from your body through the use of any tools or chemicals. There are many kinds of exfoliants in the market these days, but if you’re more a do-it-yourself person, then here’s a scrub you can do by yourself. This can be fragrance-free, cruelty-free, lightweight moisturizer you can do by yourself.

This rainbow sugar scrub is just what you need for the softest skin ever, and it’s easy to make at home with sugar, grapeseed oil, and essential oils. Dye is optional.

3. Ultra-moisturizing Lotion

If you hate flaky, dry, and dull skin, then it’s definitely important that you moisturize your skin. Keeping your skin moist can help your skin stay young.

Another dry skin tip you can use is this homemade ultra-moisturizing lotion, it’s an excellent base recipe that you can adjust and modify based on your favorite essential oils (jojoba oil is one of the best!) or what works best for your skin. No irritation or inflammation skin care for sensitive skin.

4. Body Butter on Dry Skin

They say Cerave moisturizing cream is one of the best out there. But if you don’t want a commercialized formula for your skin, here’s an alternative. Another method you can use to moisturize your skin is by applying body butter to your dry skin. Body butter is where it’s at when your skin is feeling particularly parched. It’s thick, creamy, and very effective.

Body butter is mostly made up of naturally derived butter such as cocoa butter or shea butter. It is mostly used to moisturize very dry skin.

5. Wrap Your Feet After Moisturizing

Another dry skin tip for you, and it’s approved by dermatologist: after moisturizing your feet, wrap them in saran wrap and put on thick socks before going to sleep. It helps the moisturizer really sink into the skin, leaving them much softer after a good night’s sleep.

This method is commonly used to treat cracked heels. It will also give ample time for the moisturizer to do its job while you sleep. You can try it and tell us how it goes.

6. A Pair of Gloves On Your Moisturized Hands

The same concept also applies to your hands. After coating them liberally in moisturizer, pull on a pair of gloves. The cream will sink into your skin overnight leaving you with silky smooth hands texture in the morning. Be sure that your hand moisturizer contains emollient, like ceramides, to make sure your skin repair gets the best care.

Covering your hands or your feet with cloth or plastic will help your skin absorb more of the oils from your moisturizer making them much softer.

7. Avoid extremely hot showers

This one is a big no, no dry skin tip. If you are a fan of the hot shower, maybe it’s time to cut back from it. Hot showers can make your skin dry and itchy. While they may feel good at the moment, they deplete your skin with much-needed moisture.  Having a cool or lukewarm bath is much better for your skin.

8. Use Lotion Bars On Your Dry Skin

Lotion bars are just like bars of small soap but are actually lotion. They take on a solid form but melt easily when in contact with the skin because of body heat.  They are mostly made up of butter and oils. It’s very handy for traveling because you can just put them in a small jar and take them wherever you go. Say goodbye to fine lines especially of you have acne-prone skin!

Making your own lotion bars is another dry skin tip for you. These soothing lotion bars are made with wintergreen and spearmint essential oils to rejuvenate tired bodies.  Give it a try!

9. Use Humidifier In Your Home

Aside from using colloidal oatmeal, products with collagen to fight humectants and skin barrier, don’t underestimate the power of humidifying your home. We know humidity plays an important part in the moisturizing of our skin. We want a not too low and not too high humidity so as not to make our skin dry. And that’s where these humidifiers come in.

Humidifiers are not only a great help for your colds and flu, but it is also good for your skin. You don’t need to look for glycerin or the right SPF for this one! Invest in a humidifier (affiliate). It will add moisture to the air so to make your skin feel less parched in the winter.

Just a friendly reminder to make sure you clean your humidifier regularly. Because it is always moist, humidifiers can easily breed molds and bacterias.

10. Try a Cucumber Sugar Scrub

We all see those videos that use cucumbers to treat their eye bags, but do you know that cucumbers have so much more uses than just to reduce your eyes’ puffiness? Because cucumber is almost 96% water, it is one of the most refreshing and cooling vegetables there is.  Not only that, but cucumbers also have the same pH as our skin.

Some of the best oils you can use for the oil cleansing method are:

  • sweet almond oil
  • grape seed oil
  • avocado oil
  • sunflower oil
  • apricot kernel oil
