When you feel pain in your teeth, figuring out what is causing your discomfort can help you figure out how to address your pain, swelling, and any other symptoms. 

While the best course of action is to speak with your dentist as soon as possible, here are some home remedies for toothache that can help relieve the pain until you can be seen in your dentist’s office.

1. Saltwater Rinse

One of the first methods to reach for is a saltwater rinse. Saltwater disinfects naturally, which means it can fight bacteria that cause infections.

Additionally, swishing with salt water can help by reducing inflammation and healing any wounds within the mouth. Take care not to swallow any of the saltwater while you rinse.

Start with a cup of hot water, then stir in a teaspoon of salt. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then swish it around for roughly 30 seconds before spitting it out. You can repeat this treatment multiple times if needed.

2. Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint tea bags are considered safe and have properties that can ease numb gums and ease oral pain for a little while. 

You can use peppermint tea bags in 2 different ways: cool tea bags in the freezer briefly before using or apply the tea bag while it’s warm and then wait for it to cool.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

It’s also worth trying a rinse with hydrogen peroxide to help to lessen pain and inflammation. To help kill bacteria, reduce plaque, treat bleeding gums, and relieve some pain, swish with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.

Hydrogen peroxide will need to be properly diluted before using it safely. Mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Shake well before swishing it around your mouth. Spit it out and rinse out your mouth with water at least twice. Make sure you do not swallow it.

4. Cold Compress

A cold compress can relieve pain by constricting the blood vessels in the area where you hold the compress. Using a cold compress not only reduces pain but also diminishes inflammation and is especially effective when your tooth pain is caused by trauma. 

Hold a bag of ice wrapped in a thin towel to the painful area for 15-20 minutes. Remove the bag of ice for at least 15 minutes. You can repeat this process several times a day.

5. Use a Hot Pack

You can relieve pain by putting a hot pack on the side of your jaw where your tooth hurts. The heat from the pack will help interrupt pain signals from your mouth to your brain, making it feel better temporarily.

6. Garlic

Garlic has been renowned for it’s healing properties for millennia. It’s very effective for killing harmful dental bacteria as well as relieving pain and discomfort.

Take a clove of garlic and crush it to make a paste. Then apply the paste to the area of discomfort. If you want to add a dash of salt, you can. Another option is to chew a fresh clove of garlic.

7. Vanilla extract

The alcohol in vanilla extract serves to numb the painful area; its antioxidant properties help with healing, too. 

To use this method, take a cotton ball and add vanilla extract in a small amount – only a drop or two. Hold the cotton ball on the uncomfortable area several times each day. Be forewarned that the taste can be quite strong!

A small amount of clove oil dabbed onto a cotton ball and applied directly to the painful tooth itself should do the trick. Avoid using the oil in large quantities as it can worsen the pain when applied directly to soft tissue like your tongue or gum tissue. This treatment is safe to do several times per day.

9. Guava Leaves

Guava leaves’ anti-inflammatory properties can help lessen pain and sterilize oral wounds while helping to heal wounds. Boil water and add crushed guava leaves to create a mouthwash or you can chew on fresh guava leaves.

10. Myrrh

Myrrh’s anti-bacterial traits make it a great home remedy for a toothache. Take 1 teaspoon of powdered myrrh and simmer it for about 30 minutes in 2 cups of water. Strain and then cool. Add 1 teaspoon of the solution to a half of a cup of water and rinse with this several times during the day.

11. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass‘s multiple healing properties can relieve inflammation in your mouth. It contains large amounts of chlorophyll which helps to kill bacteria and prevent infections.

The best way to do this is to rinse your mouth with wheatgrass juice.

12. Thyme

Oil from the herb thyme can help treat toothaches with the benefit of its potent antibacterial and antioxidant qualities. Mix equal parts of thyme essential oil with olive oil (just 2-3 drops each). Then, add it to a cotton ball and use it on the area where you feel pain.
