Naturally Unclog Drains & Toilets
Before you call the plumber in a panic, try this method and see if it works and unclogs those drains for you! You might already have vinegar and baking soda on hand, and not have to make a trip to the store!
Unclogging Toilet
- Depending on how severe the clog is, will depend on the route you want to go by unclogging the toilet! You will want to use equal parts of baking soda and vinegar for the clog. Generally, 1-2 cups of each should be used. So if you use one cup baking soda, you then use one cup vinegar.
- If the toilet is severely clogged, take your baking soda and slowly pour it into the toilet, a little at a time. Allow time for the baking soda to work down to the bottom of the toilet. For minor clogs, just pour the baking soda in and let it sit for a minute or two.
- Next, follow up by slowly pouring in your 1-2 cups of vinegar. Do this slowly as it will fizz and you don’t want it to overflow and go all over your floor. Allow this to work for five minutes before moving on to the next step.
- While you are waiting for the vinegar and baking soda to do its job, start boiling 5 cups of water. Once hot, pour the hot water into the toilet bowl, and hopefully, this will start to unclog your toilet. By pouring in the water, it should work and go down the drain, as you pour it in.
- You can repeat this process if the clog doesn’t release the first time. Try to flush the toilet to see if it is working to release the clog. In between attempts you can use the plunger to see if that will help loosen things up.
For Clogged Drains
- This is similar to unclogging your toilet. You will use equal parts of baking soda and vinegar in the process. First off you will want to stick your hand in the drain and pull out any hair or debris you might have stuck.
- Then sprinkle 1-2 cups of baking soda into the drain, next pour in 1-2 cups of vinegar. This will begin to fizz immediately. Let this sit for 30 minutes.
- Boil up 6 cups of water and then pour the hot water down the drain. This should begin to drain easier and loosen up the gunk and grime within the drain.
- You can test to see if it is working better by running the water for a minute. If it drains fast you unclogged it, if still slow you might need another attempt.
- If the drain is still acting slow, repeat the process again. You can do this as a maintenance to keep drains running smooth as well, do every month to two months.
